It was shortly after his success at the Lab that Kosumo began to pass through town. It was small and quaint, but it couldn't hurt to look around, especially with the pokemon you could find around here, no matter how few that was. A headstart on the first route was in order, since Kosumo really had no idea what he was doing, even if he looked professional about this whole situation.
Smoothly, he took the small pokeball from his pocket and tossed it towards the floor, letting it bounce open to reveal the Sandshrew he had chosen before it rebound back into his palm. Kosumo kneeled down to come face-to-face with the ground-type who seemed to fidget with much unused energy. "Okay, Fault." He uttered, watching the mouse-like pokemon scurry around in a circle before looking back up at the trainer, tail flicking side-to-side. "I'm ready to do this if you are . . ." His voice deep, smooth and steady ask he spoke. The newly obtained Sandshrew nodded vigorously to this, he was very ready! And hyper, it seemed. "Alright then." Kosumo uttered, standing back up, "I guess we should get started then."
The boy paused a minutes, sharing a glance with his Pokemon, "Now, how does this work . . ."

"How does what work," someone asked from the shadows. A young boy walked out, a superior look upon his face. "Gee, you don't know very much do you? If you let your Pokemon out of its pokeball, it will only run away on you," he sneered snootily.
"I just got my first Pokemon from my father. He is a breeder, so there's no way that your pathetic Sandshrew could defeat it. So, wanna battle?" he asked, drawing a ball from his belt. "Oh, my name's Andrew, just so you can know the name of the person who is about to put an abrupt end to your training journey," he added with a snicker.

Kosumo eyed the boy, looking him over a moment as if he was analyzing something, before he turned to the other male completely. He shrugged his pack from over his shoulder and took out a pokedex, just to be ready for when this trainer released his pokemon. After all, that little device might come in handy later on if he gathered as much as he could in it now.
"I can always heal him at the Pokemon Center if I loose." Kosu replied, hesitant about this whole situation, "I don't have to discontinue traveling if you defeat me." From his studies, of course pokemon breed where much stronger, and no matter what type of pokemon he had, it would surely be better than his Lab-obtained pokemon. He would either need luck, or really good tactics. "I only have Sandshrew, so I'll be using him." Assuming already that this would only be a one on one battle.
"Shrew!" The ground-type jittered with excitement, scurrying forward for the battle.

"Well, its your funeral. But if you can't defeat me, do you really think that you have what it takes to be a Pokemon trainer?" the other guy snickered again. He threw his ball to the ground, and a Charmander popped forth.
"Giza, run this shrimp into the ground!" he ordered, even though Kosumo was both older and taller than him. Giza sighed, shaking its head sadly.
Giza charged towards the Sandshrew, claws outstreached for a scratch attack. He seemed to strike at Fault resignedly, as if he really didn't want to obey Andrew at all. [/sub]

Kosumo watched the Pokedex as it entered both the information on his Sandshrew and Andrew's Charmander. As the fire-type attacked suddenly he dropped the Pokedex, almost in a panic and released a command to his pokemon. "First use Defense Curl, Fault!" The boy shouted, hurried and nervous.
"Shrew!" The ground-type rolled into a ball, shielding itself from the scratch attack with his hard outer skin, which was building up his defense by the second.

Abdrew realized his mistake too late. The Scratch hit, but instead of causing hardly any damage to Sandshrew, it hurt Charmander. Giza pulled his paw back, cradlig it in his other arm.
"Use Leer!" Andrew commanded angrily. The Charmander's eyes began to glow red, eerily so. They bored in onto the Sandshrew, glowing, threatening. [/sub]

Fault got to his feet from the ball he had rolled himself into, watching the Charmander recoil from it's original attack. "Sand!" It jumped with excitement from it's small victory, only to come fact to face with the Leer given by the fire-type. He stepped back, hesitant, until he heard his trainer from behind.
"Fault, Scratch!" Yes, it was his turn to be on the offensive. It may be a cowardly strategy, but it was all that Kosumo knew. His partner, at the command, lunged forward for his own attack.

The attack hit the already weakened Charmander, and sent it sprawling backwards. <Nice strategy! That's smart!> the Charmander congradulated Kosumo.
"Use Scratch!" Andrew yelled at his Pokemon, obviously angry that his Pokemon had congratulated his opponent.
<Too bad my trainer isn't that smart,> Giza mumbled underneath of his breath. He charged towards Fault with another Scratch attack, this time his other paw poised to strike. [/sub]

Kosumo frowned, it would be smart to use another Defense Curl, but that wasn't going to happen. With the way the Charmander was acting with it's trainer, hurting it like that was the last thing he wanted to do, "Fault, try to dodge!"
Confused on why it should not just use another defensive move, the Sandshrew hesitated, but jumped into the air to maybe get away from the Charmander's attack.

OoC: I'll assume that you dodged it ^^ Yeah, you get to decide if the opponent's attack hits or not. Your Pokemon can each dodge twice in a trainer battle, and once each in a wild battle. This is not accounting for moves that lower or heighten accuracy (like sand-attack). I'm not sure if I put that into the rules...
----
When the Sandshrew's trainer had it try to dodge instead of heighten its defence, Charmander too became confused. His claws slipped harmlessly under the jumping Fault.
Giza looked from Fault to Kosumo, his confusion evident on his face. Finally, he just stood and smiled, some of the fires returning to his eyes. He crossed his forelegs over his chest and just stood there on his hind legs, smiling at both Kosumo and Fault.
"Getting cowardly now huh? To run away like that," Andrew said tauntingly. "Giza, use your Scratch again, and this time don't miss that Sandshrew!" he ordered.
<No.> the fire-type replied simply, yet defiantly. Andrew was at a loss for words. His father had told him that Giza would obey his every command!
"I'll tell my father. He won't be pleased with you!" Andrew threatened.
<I don't think he would be too happy with the way you've been treating me, or the way you have been acting, either> the Charmander said, a disappointed tone creeping into his voice. <You've changed.> [/sub]

Kosumo returned his pokemon in silence. "If your pokemon refuses to battle, then I win." He uttered, mellow, his words strong and solid. "You ought to treat him better, pokemon aren't slaves and they aren't mindless zombies either. They have thoughts and feelings you need to respect."
Kosumo turned on Andrew, a small scowl across his face, "Honestly, your Charmander deserves more than you give him."

Andrew stood with his mouth agape, outrage filling him. Soon though he only stood in a shocked silence, mouth still wide open. He looked from Kosumo to Giza at a loss for words. Finally he simply bowed his head.
"You win," he admitted with a sigh. He brought his head up with a smile, a forced one, but still it was a start. "I'm sorry Giza. I guess that you want to go back to dad now, huh?" he asked his Charmander.
Giza was shocked at Andrew's words, yet pleased. <No, I'll stay with you. As long as you keep that hint of your old self,> he replied. He then walked over, rather weakly but still walking, and touched his Pokeball. He disappeared in a flash of red light.
Andrew smiled genuinely, and was about to say something else to Kosumo, when a woman called out his name. His face turned as white as parchment. He ran off down the street, remembering to yell out to Kosumo before he went inside his house, just three houses away from Kosumo.
"I'm sorry, and thanks for the battle! Oh, you can jin us for supper if you'd like! My mother won't mind!!"
Fault Won, so he gained 2 levels! [/sub]

Kosumo looked back at Andrew as he disappeared, shaking his head. He couldn't let that kind of thing distract him, spending time with other people, getting to know them. That just wasn't his deal, it was time to move on. Quietly he continued through town, wondering if every trainer he met would be like that one, in some way or another. Everyone was different, he supposed. At least he got something out of the battle. Experience, in knowledge and in his pokemon's strength.
Gently, Kosumo grabbed the small pokeball and ran his fingers over the smooth, shine-y surface. "Maybe if we can't get you a friend here, there are more pokemon over on the first Route, hm?" He uttered, coming to the edge of town and continuing on. So far as he could tell, there wasn't much more here that he could do. Route One was his best bet, at this point.
